The program for this project, which began as a relatively simple unheated screened porch, evolved into a new heated sun porch addition after the homeowners reconsidered the reality of living in the Pacific Northwest where it’s dark and rainy so much of the year.
The exposed wood roof framing, walls and flooring bring visual interest and a casual warmth. The gas fireplace with raised stone hearth and surround also bring some figurative and literal heat.

“Dan was such a delight to work with. He helped with every aspect of beginning the project, including managing contractor bids. We ended up selecting a contractor Dan has worked with in the past, and we could not have been happier with the quality of the work.
In the beginning, I had in mind a small screened porch that would be reached from the back corner of the house. But Dan envisioned a larger room that would be more centrally located, with a door right off the kitchen nook. He was absolutely right, because now it’s a room we use every day.
Dan made sure he understood our thoughts about exactly what we had in mind for the addition. As we discussed it, I realized that instead of a screened porch, I could see that it would be much better to have a room that could be used year-round, with windows and a fireplace.
I sent Dan pictures of the project as work progressed, and he came by to discuss any potential issues whenever needed. I’m a person who loves to be very involved in projects like this, and he was incredibly patient with my questions and modifications along the way.
The sun porch Dan designed is absolutely stunning. When an inspector came from the City of Bellevue after the work was complete, he said that in twenty-five years of inspecting homes, this was the most beautiful addition he’d ever seen.
Our sun porch is cozy in the winter, and cool and breezy in the summer. Perfectly delightful!”
